On a sunny summer's day, solar energy is absorbed by the roof, heating the roof shroud and causing the underside of the shroud and roof truss to radiate heat downward towards the attic floor. When a Radiant heat barrier is placed on the attic floor, most of the heat emitted from the host roof is reflected back to the roof. This keeps the top surface of the insulation cooler than it would otherwise be without the Radiant heat barrier and thus reduces the amount of heat moving through the insulation into the space under the ceiling.
Under the same conditions, the Radiant heat barrier installed on the roof works by reducing the amount of radiation incident on the insulation. Since the amount of radiation hitting the top of the insulation is less than it would be without the Radiant heat barrier, the surface temperature of the insulation is lower and the flow of heat through the insulation is reduced.
